ELLO, OR BYE-BYE FACEBOOK ?
The new social network guarantees to protect your
privacy.
A new social network has appeared with the promise to break the stranglehold that Facebook was putting on the social network business. After many complaints about the quantity of adverts and the sale of the personal content of facebook profiles, Ello has been created with the slogan: ”You are not a product”. Without adverts, it also promises to protect your data from advertisers.
The success of Ello's network began after a migration of members who had their accounts deleted by Facebook. Those affected were, in most cases, transgender people and artists who didn’t give their name. The new social network, on the other hand, allows anonymity, and this way is becoming popular with this kind of user. Another attraction found in Ello is the separation of contacts into two categories: “friends”, for those we really know, and “noise”, for the others. This way, the feed can be more clearly organized and streamlined than with the one found in Facebook.
As the network intends to not promote advertising, it is
searching for new ways to be funded. The idea is to be financially supported by
donations or perhaps to charge for signing up. The objective is simply to
be “connected”, “to create”, and to “celebrate life”, as we can read in
its manifesto. According to the owners and developers, Ello is based on beauty,
simplicity and transparency.
Despite its sudden growth,
Ello is still a small network . Access is possible only by invitation from
friends who have already signed up, which restricts access and so slows the
rate of expansion. However, Ello seems to be an alternative for those who are
unhappy with Facebook’s format and its policies. People are becoming increasingly
annoyed at having their personal information sold to businesses without them
receiving a share of the profits. Ello has found the Achilles’ heel of it
competitor, and now it’s up to them take the advantage of this.
